Mockingbird, ch. 12

Why did Harper Lee make it a point to mention the political cartoon in which Atticus appears barefoot? What can you infer from it?

  1. When Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to her church, the children experience very different reactions from the majority of the churchgoers and Lula. Why do you suspect that Lula responds the way that she does?

  2. Reflect on the conversation that Jem and Scout have with Calpurnia regarding the way that she speaks at church vs. the way that she speaks in the Finch household. How do their young ages allow for information to be shared in such a unique fashion?

  3. At one point in the chapter, Calpurnia says, “…folks don’t like to have somebody around knowin’ more than they do. It aggravates ‘em. You’re not gonna change any of them by talkin’ right, they’ve got to want to learn themselves, and when they don’t want to learn there’s nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language.” Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

  4. Why do you think Aunt Alexandra has come to town?

I'd like you to work with at least one other person when responding to these questions because I'd like you to have a discussion about them before recording your answers. All of you DO need to have written responses, but they just need to be notes--not complete sentences and lengthy paragraphs. We will discuss chapter 12 in class on Wednesday when I return from waterslide central.
